P-touch Editor 5 software lets you use your PC’s fonts, and include images, symbols and barcodes on your labels, or download the iPrint&Label app to design and print labels from your smartphone or tablet. By using the P-touch Utility, the printer’s communication settings for Wireless Direct and device settings can be specified from the Macintosh computer. Before connecting the USB cable to the computer, check that the Editor Lite lamp is not lit.

P Touch Editor 5.2


P-touch QL-500 had been working fine. Installed following updates on 10/14/17:

  • Security update 2017-003
  • Safari 10.1.2
  • Remote Desktop Client Update 3.9.3
  • Canon Inkjet Printer Software Update 3.4


Can no longer print to QL-500. After a short pause, the green link on the front of the labeler started blinking.


Went to Brother site.

Uninstalled driver, downloaded and installed driver 4.2.1

Uninstalled P-Touch Editor 5.0, downloaded and installed P-Touch Editor 5.1

Downloaded and installed P-Touch Update Software (Mac) 1.4.7

Turned on QL-500 (had turned off for installations)

Opened P-Touch Editor 5.1, message displayed saying that an updated driver was needed for that version of the editor. I ignored the message and was able to format a label.

When I select Print from the File menu, a message is displayed: The printer is not turned on or not connected directly to the Mac. OK to print?

I select OK, then Print. Nothing prints and the green light on the front of the labeler blinks rapidly.


The manual Feed button works on the labeler.


I saw a similar issue with a different P-Touch model. The solution was to get a Mac driver from Japan. Does anyone know how I could find out if thereʻs a driver for the QL-500, anywhere?
