Utility Apowersoft Screen Capture Pro offers a host of image capture, editing, and sharing tools, with just a couple of drawbacks.

In the software-reviewing game, I constantly need to capture screen images, and SnagIt has been my go-to utility for several years. But recently, the program has become cluttered with features I don't use, and the interface has become less appealing to me, with its ever-present desktop gadget. So when I heard about Apowersoft Screen Capture Pro ($39.95), a new screen-capture utility that purports to do everything that competing software, such as Ashampoo Snap does, I decided to give it a shot.

The video editing software offers the option to export the edited Apowersoft Video Editor Crack movie to any format so as to be played in iPhone 7s, iPhone 7, iPad, Samsung Galaxy, HTC or other devices. Get Started
You can actually run the software from your Web browser, courtesy of Java, but I prefer to install the program so that it's always available for screenshots. I clicked Download Desktop Version, and ran the lightweight 17.6MB installer. The software runs on Windows 7 and later. A free version is available, but with it, you don't get 24-hour tech service, lifetime tech support, or free updates. Even the paid version still costs less than SnagIt's $49.95. Like most screen capture utilities, Apowersoft installs a system tray icon (also known as the notification area), from which you can change settings or invoke the full program window.

Interface and Features
When I first ran the program, a warning message told me that one of its preconfigured hotkeys was already taken—by coincidence, it was the same hotkey I use for SnagIt. If you take a lot of screenshots, as we do here at PCMag, hotkey operation is essential. You want to be able to fire up the capture tool at a moment's notice whenever you see a screen you need to save. To the same end, there's also an option, which is switched on by default, to have the utility load when you start Windows. You can even take a screenshot of a webpage by entering its URL; you don't even need to open the page in your browser. The program also had no trouble capturing drop-down menus within programs in my testing.

Apowersoft Screen Capture Pro actually resembles SnagIt quite a bit, though its design is lighter and more cheerful. In addition to hotkey capture, you get a selection of capture styles, including Full Screen, Window, Menu, Freehand, Scrolling Window, Region, and Polygon. But the most useful mode is All-in-One, which switches among modes based on your mouse input. You can either just click for a full screen capture or you can frame your capture by dragging a rectangle while holding down the left button. Snagit's All-in-One mode goes beyond what's available in the Apowersoft utility, however, by including scrolling arrows for things like webpages that stretch beyond the border of the screen.

In my tests, the program's separate scrolling page capture inched its way down the PCMag.com homepage and produced a very tall PNG image. A delayed-capture option is available from the Capture Settings window, and this allows scheduling of multiple shots at regular intervals—Apowersoft suggests using this as a child-monitoring tool. Recording on-screen action as video output is another option in Apowersoft. The interface for the screen recorder is very clear, and an online video converter is available in a direct link from the program.

You can also choose what the program should do after you pull the screen-capture trigger. You can have it open the image in a Quick or Advanced editor. Alternatively, you can simply have the image copied to the clipboard or saved as a PNG, JPG, TIFF, GIF, BMP, or even a PDF file to a folder of your choice.

Final Cut For Mac

When you snap a screenshot, the utility's interface disappears. If you output it to the app's Quick Editor (something not offered by SnagIt), your image is framed by button options, letting you reshoot, change the selection type, share, and even choose editing options like highlighting, adding text, and blur. An X closes this toolbar. If you choose Advanced Editor, a full image editor opens with the image loaded, just as it does with SnagIt.

One limitation: The program couldn't handle the second monitor in my dual-monitor setup. It could only capture the screen on the primary display, which might be a deal-killer for some users.

Image Editing
Snagit gives you the option of opening its image editor with your just-captured screenshot open right after it's grabbed. But the toolbar that shows up when you shoot in Screen Capture gets you nearly the same functionality, and choosing at that point could be better than always opening the editor.

The image editor offers just about everything you get in SnagIt: You can add arrows, shapes, text, and even apply effects like blur, sharpen, and pixelate. You can also crop, resize, rotate, and add borders including the torn-page look.

One SnagIt capability that I find extremely useful is missing. SnagIt saves an internal copy of all your screen captures, which you can search for by date, tag, name or folder. With Apowersoft Screen Capture Pro, you're stuck with standard Windows file management methods: Only images you explicitly save are saved. But the toolbar that shows up right after a capture makes this easier, and you're prompted to save every shot you've snapped when you go to close the program.

Sharing
Sharing options are more basic than those offered by SnagIt, but the program does offer saving to the cloud at screenshot.net. I also like how easy it is to share a screen in a tweet or Facebook post, both of which also take advantage of the screenshot.net hosting. It's also easy to email an attached image file; the program will load your mail client with the attachment in a new message.

Powerful Screen Capture for Less
I was impressed with Apowersoft Screen Capture Pro's many tools and capabilities. It offers nearly all the capturing and editing features you could ask for, including timed and video screen recording. The only things that hold it back from the level of PCMag's Editors' Choice screen capture utility, SnagIt, are its lack of multiple monitor support and image organization and retrieval tools.

Bottom Line: Utility Apowersoft Screen Capture Pro offers a host of image capture, editing, and sharing tools, with just a couple of drawbacks.
